Summer/Fall 2009
The 2009 year has proven to be one of the best years for dog showing I have had since,
ironically, 1999. I did not think I had shown a lot, but after
having the dogs pose with their ribbons for photographs, I realize how active we have been. Niven, Torch and I have been all over the place, each dog
performing well in the given ring. I have been really pleased with Niven as she adjusted to Agility trial
excitement and have been happy with what Torch
has offered. Could the three of us do better? Absolutely! That is why new years are looked forward to with
anticipation and change of strategy for continued success.
I picked one sport per d og and stuck to using that training for a foundation; Niven with Agility and Torch with Breed. Since Niven is an
adult dog I
pursued the more active of sports, choosing to wait until Torch grew up enough to have him follow. The new year sees the little dude reach the year and
a half mark and it was time to give him some thing more entertaining to figure out. After showing him through the end of summer, one aspect that needed
to change was the 'fun factor' that seems to have gone missing. I have decided to focus on Agility training this year with both Torch and Niven being
shown in Rally-Obedience. This way we all can do something different, both dogs can be trained and shown while we build a working relationship.
In the meantime, Torch can continue to mature and Niven and I with him.

I am amazed at how much can be achieved in one year. Niven completed all three AKC Agility Novice titles and picked up a few wins for the Open ones.
She also picked up a few USDAA Novice/Starters wins and showed well in Steeplechase Regionals, but did not make the cut because of mistakes I made
on course. I am totally enjoying running "back in Novice and Open", the wait between runs only an hour while people outside of the ring celebrate each other's wins
and "augh" the losses.
As a pure goof, I ended up entering Niv in a Herding Instinct Test where she not only did really well, but also completed the certification. Driving
home after the test, even Mike pointed out that this Retriever really has become my all around dog and he could not be further from truth. I never
thought I would own a dog equal in Crumpet's caliber, but Niv is fast filling that void.
As for Obedience, that will be held off for a while. Instead I am going to give Rally-O a shot use as a spring board. We are entered in a match at the
end of January, but I am not sure if we will be able to attend due to timing.

Torch has been a learning experience all around. He has been fun to show in Breed, but I want to pursue something a bit more mentally demanding for
him. He is the type of dog that knows exactly who he is, but needs a bit more experience to help it shine through. I ended the year by putting him
out on sheep and that was a great evaluation! There are different training aspects I want to try with Torch before returning to the Breed Ring.
So the 2010 year is about Agility training and ring time with Rally-O. At the end of the year we will return to the Breed ring with maturity and experience
backing the team. This dog holds too much promise that is just waiting for direction and it is time to take it seriously.
Sprout is still Sprout. She continues to sleep, but every now and then we find her bouncing her way across the deck in attempt to keep
up with the other two. Big adventures remain making it to the other end of the yard. The biggest performance sport for Sprout is "breathing" and
for that she gets a ton of treats. : D
As it is always, 2010 should be interesting.

Attending a few Agility trials during the 2009 year, Niven has really come together as a working partner. She completed the AKC Novice titles for
Standard, Jumpers and FAST, while picking up a few wins towards the Open ones. In USDAA, Niven also picked up a few wins towards those Novice titles,
demonstrating how well we have pulled together.
We will also be focusing on Rally-O soon, as well as some Retrieving work if time permits, but will not be pursuing Herding.

Torch is from Kandy Boll and Michele Pohl's Corgard Kennel. I am absolutely honored to have him come here and I look forward to the Breed Ring and the Performance
Sports after being away for so long.
This little guy puts his heart into everything he does, from barking at the wild rabbits to chasing down the Black Labrador Sheep. Until now, we
have focused on the Breed Ring and it is time to have fun with more things to do. Come January 2010, we will begin Agility and Rally-O training
and I am really looking forward to seeing what he does.

Sprout is a Fluffy Corgi who came to live with us when she was about six years old. Having a different personality, she has greatly effected
the way I train and the reason for the understanding of the 'why'.
She has been run on Agility courses, but I never pursued serious training. I did however attend an obedience class where we began
work toward our Obedience CD. I had wanted to get her around Sheep to go for the Pembroke Herding Certified award, but unfortunately time was not on my side.
Currently Sprout resides under my desk or on the deck.

After twelve and a half years, Crumpet has offered countless experiences and the stories to go with them. I have said over his lifetime he was
irreplaceable, his
ability to work countless hours at shows, trials and under foot the proof.
Crumpet has been the best friend anyone could have and I have the delight to say that he was mine. I am truly sorry to lose this guy, but take
solace in knowing
God got a good one to work with.

Jazzy
May 10, 2000 - January 16, 2008
Jazzy was bred by Elizabeth Brown and remained with her. We had shown her in Breed, resulting in a few Class Placements. Her littermate, Victor, showed more
promise and became Betsy's focus.
During that time, Jazzy and I attended a few sessions of Obedience Class, she showing working promise of the dogs in her Pedigree. Time restraint kept me away from
all rings and I missed the opportunity to continue showing her.
Jazzy suffered serious effects from a major seizure that led Betsy to make the best decision. She is sorely missed.
